Beaches around the Mount Batten peninsula have been closed for the past few weeks as a precautionary measure after small pieces of low grade asbestos were found, and while we carried out some tests. Asbestos is only an issue if fibres become airborne, and one of the priority actions was to test sand samples to see if they contained any asbestos fibres.
We are pleased to say that we have now had the sand sample test results back, and that no asbestos fibres have been found.
We are working with external asbestos experts to risk assess the actions we need to take to reduce risks to a minimum, and will continue to keep the beaches closed while we clear more of the asbestos-containing cement.
We apologise for the ongoing inconvenience of the beach closures, but the health and safety of our residents remains our top priority.
