We have completed an initial cleaning sweep of the beach at Mount Batten but as a precautionary measure the beach is still closed for now.
We understand this may be frustrating and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but we must emphasise that the health and safety of our residents is our top priority.
The initial sweep showed us that the asbestos we have found is in small pieces and is of low-grade. We are returning to the beach next week and currently waiting for the results of more tests. We are continuing our investigations supported by experts from the Environment Agency and Public Health England.
Asbestos is only an issue if the fibres become airborne, and so, as a precaution, we want to prevent people from accessing areas of dry sand. People who take part in water sports are still able to access the sea via the slipways and pontoon.
Whilst we don’t know for certain what the source is, we believe it relates to historic building activity in the immediate area, rather than a recent fly tip.
Once we have the results of all the tests and take advice from the experts we will be able to know the best way forward to complete the beach clean and will be able to plan for reopening the beach.
