One of the UK’s most iconic outdoor leisure venues which attracts thousands of visitors every year, is teaming up with Plymouth City Council and NHS England to promote staying safe in the sun.
Tinside Lido, which is run by Everyone Active, is supporting the #CoverUpMate campaign throughout the summer holidays. Staff at the Lido are supporting the campaign, led by NHS England South, which aims to remind people who are enjoying themselves outside, as well as those who work outside, for example builders, gardeners, road workers and farmers, to wear sunscreen and stay safe in the sun. The ultimate aim is to reduce the incidence of skin cancer, as figures show that cases of sunburn-related skin cancer in Plymouth have almost doubled since 2004.
There were 17 deaths in Plymouth from malignant melanoma (skin cancer) in 2014. Across the whole South West region there were 284 deaths from skin cancer in the same year, of which 169 were men.
Councillor Lynda Bowyer, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care for Plymouth City Council said: “We’re pleased to help promote the #CoverUpMate campaign here in Plymouth, where we have some beautiful scenery and fantastic and unique outdoor leisure facilities, such as Tinside Lido, that we want people to be able to enjoy as safely as possible.
“We also know that skin cancer in men is increasing at a faster rate than it is for women, and men are less likely to use sunscreen.”
Everyone Active’s contract manager, David Greenwood, said: “It’s our mission to improve the health and wellbeing of people in Plymouth. This includes encouraging them to be proactive when it comes to preventing the development of life-threatening conditions.
“Tinside Lido is a fantastic facility, and in the hot weather especially it attracts lots of people who are looking for fun and active ways to enjoy the sunshine. We’re delighted to be supporting this campaign and encouraging more people to protect their health when getting active outdoors.”
Tinside Lido is an art deco outdoor pool which was built in 1935, is Grade II listed and has been voted one of the top ten outdoor pools in Europe.
