Get down to the Jam

The Central Park Skate Park is set to officially re-open in style.

Having been revamped and extended over the past few months, regular users of the park got wheels-to-concrete at the made over park for the first time in June.

But now skaters, riders and scooters are being encouraged to hone their skills ahead of an official Opening Jam on Saturday 21 July.

In association with Prime Skate Park, there will be competitions for scooters, skateboards and BMX, there will also be prizes, raffles and stalls, food and live music, between 12 noon and 4pm.

A parkour demonstration will also take place to highlight the park’s new free-running facilities.

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet member for Environment and Street Scene, who said: “This will be a great event to celebrate one of the highlights of the Central Park project.

“This is a facility that will available to all ages and abilities and we also help attract people to take up extreme sports.

“The amount of positive feedback that we have already received on Facebook and Twitter has been astounding and I’m looking forward to seeing people put the park through its paces.”

As part of the recent makeover, the skate park has got bigger and better, adding a snake run which is popular with skaters and BMX riders. There is a training bowl for those less confident riders and skaters, and additional seating for spectators.

A quarter pipe and “slappy kerb” have been installed and after consultation from regular users during the planning, a free running/parkour area, amended to improve the flow between structures, is also included.

The improvements to the skate park form just a small part of the wider Central Park improvements programme.

Included in the plan are a new café, adventurous and enchanting play areas, path upgrades, four new tennis courts, new cricket, rugby and junior football pitches complete with improved changing facilities and improvement to drainage across the park.
