Extensive resurfacing programme to get under way in June

A major resurfacing programme that will repair some of Plymouth’s key arterial routes will be carried out this summer.

The 18-week programme, which gets under way on Wednesday 3 June, will focus on areas of the strategic road network that are in most need of repair and see 20 of the city’s main roads and three roundabouts given a new lease of life.

While crews are on site they will also carry out works to enhance walking and cycling routes and improve drainage systems, as well as any other routine maintenance that may be needed.

The works are part of an £11.2 million repair programme that will treat two thirds of the city’s strategic road network (A, B and C roads) over the next three years.

The programme is part-funded by the Department for Transport’s Highway Maintenance Challenge Fund with an additional £2.8 million being invested by the Council.

It is being carried out by our highways contractor Amey, alongside our day-to-day road maintenance programme, which sees 10 gangs carrying out permanent first-time repairs to individual potholes across the city.

Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Transport said: “We will be spending more than £8 million improving Plymouth’s roads and pavements this financial year. More than 6,000 carriageway defects have already been repaired since April, including Roadmaster works and our micro-asphalting programme.

“An effective and well maintained transport network is essential part of the infrastructure needed for jobs, education and leisure facilities and the upcoming resurfacing works will target key routes on the city’s strategic transport network.”

All works will be carried out at night in order to minimise any disruption to traffic.

Residents and businesses near the works are being notified in advance and, where road closures are required, diversion routes will be signed. Access to properties will be maintained when and where possible.
