Devonport Community Focus Week 7-12 July 2014

Fire safety and crime prevention will be among the subjects covered as part of a Community Focus Week in the Devonport area.

Throughout the week from Monday 7 July to Saturday 12 July events will be taking place around the area to raise awareness of a range of community safety issues and information about local services. The week is a partnership between Plymouth City Council, Devon and Cornwall Police, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, and Plymouth Community Homes (PCH).

Among other subjects being covered will be trading standards, Junior Crimestoppers and information on illegal money lending. Pupils from local primary schools will also be attending Diggin’ It to find out about organic gardening, while PCH tenants will also have information sessions.

Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet member for Co-operatives and Community Development said: “This week of activities starting on 7 July will focus on a number of issues in the neighbourhood and will bring together the community and various agencies so we can tackle them together. It will also give local people the opportunity to network, and find out what local services have to offer.”

PC Ryan Pengelly of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: “The focus week is an excellent opportunity for the Police and partner agencies to engage with the local communities in and around Devonport.”

“The week will reinforce our commitment to support young people and the community and to reduce crime by developing valuable relationships, and encouraging people to be proactive in the areas in that they live in.”

“The events of the week will provide people with the opportunity to find out information about a variety of issues and the chance to get involved in various initiatives and activities that will contribute to a safer and vibrant neighbourhood.”

Clive Turner, Chief Executive of Plymouth Community Homes said: “At PCH we work to help communities thrive. Feeling safe in your home and in your neighbourhood is crucial and we’re really pleased to be a part of this special week for Devonport.”
