Council team work through the night to clear rubbish dumped on the A38

More than 1.3 tonnes were collected from a four mile stretch of the Plymouth parkway on Friday night.

A crew of four people from the Council’s Street Cleansing department have been clearing a section of the A38 between Plympton Hill and Manadon roundabout.

Crews removed 116 bags of collected waste, 11 bags of fly tipped waste and several large items including ladders, sign frames, cones, a roof box and even half a dozen bottles of urine.

It costs £2,200 a night to clear rubbish from the A38 as the team also need to employ specialist contractors to alert drivers that there are workers on the road. This includes a safety cushion which prevents other road users from colliding with the clean up crew.

Councillor Mike Leaves Cabinet Member for Streetscene and the Environment said: “People really don’t appreciate the amount of waste that builds up alongside the A38 while driving and it’s not until you walk it that you get a real sense of the problem. Clearing up this mess is ultimately costing the tax payer money so I would urge people to think twice before they dump their rubbish by the side of the road.”

Drivers caught dropping litter can be fined up to £2,500 and find themselves in court. There is no limit for the level of fine that can be given to fly-tippers, including a prison sentence.

Councillor Leaves added: “If you see anyone throwing litter from a vehicle, please report the date and time that you saw it and the registration number of the vehicle through the Council’s website so we can investigate.”

The City Council is responsible for an eight mile stretch of the A38 from Plympton Hill to the Tamar Bridge which includes 18 slipways and six laybys. Crews will be out clearing the road for the next five Friday nights.
