Dr Ruth Harrell, Director of Public Health for Plymouth City Council, said: “Access to all beaches around the Mount Batten peninsula is currently closed for health and safety reasons, following the discovery of asbestos containing materials on Mount Batten beach.
“Asbestos is an issue if the fibres become airborne, and so, as a precaution, we want to prevent people from accessing areas of dry sand. People who take part in watersports are still able to access the sea via the slipways and pontoon
“We will be assessing the situation in full during the next week and will be able to update shortly.
“Plymouth City Council apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but we must emphasise that the health and safety of our residents is our top priority.”
