Chance for youngsters to name a Council road gritter

Primary school children in Plymouth are being challenged to get creative and ‘Name a Gritter’ this winter.

Our gritting fleet is ready for the winter season and our highways contractor Amey has organised the competition to find a suitable name for one of the vehicles.

Two of the gritters that will be out keeping the city’s roads safe are already named ‘Shakespeare Shifter’ and ‘Grit Lightning’, following an earlier school competition.

The pupil who comes up with the best name will receive a high street voucher worth £20 and their school will win a grit bin, salt to fill it and snow shovels. The gritter will also visit the school to show off its new name.

Paul Anderson, Account Manager at Amey said: “Our gritters are on call 24/7 in winter and cover hundreds of miles to keep Plymouth moving. This ensures that as many roads as possible are kept safe and clear. We look forward to seeing the competition entries and choosing a new name for the gritter.”

Pupils and schools can email their name suggestions and contact details to melanie.mcconville@amey.co.uk or send them by post to Melanie McConville, Amey, Prince Rock Depot, Macadam Road, Plymouth PL4 0RZ.

The competition closes on Monday 12 January.
