Plymouth City Council was announced large employer of the year at the Apprenticeships 4 England award 2015 last night.
At the awards ceremony which took place at the Grand Connaught Rooms, London, Plymouth City Council beat Portsmouth City Council, Haymarket Media and Arqiva Ltd, to the title.
Council Leader Tudor Evans said: “I am incredibly proud of our apprenticeship co-ordinators. They do a fantastic job with our apprentices, many of whom go on to have very successful careers within the Council and also with other organisations in the city. By entering these awards we are supporting and raising the profile for apprentices across the whole country.”
This year’s awards saw a 100 per cent increase in the number of entries, from the previous year, which demonstrates the scale of the achievement.
Senior Apprentice Coordinator Ken Holder, who attended the event on behalf of the council, said: “Apprenticeships are fantastic opportunities for everyone concerned. By nurturing young talent and providing them with on the job training, our apprentices will earn whilst they train and gain a nationally recognised qualification.
“From sports development to vehicle maintenance, marketing and project management, we offer a wide range of apprenticeships and many of our apprentices go on to get further employment with us.
“Training and development does not stop once they graduate from the scheme, we continue to support and encourage our former apprentices through continuous professional development and ongoing career development.”
Apprenticeships 4 England Chief Executive, Lindsay McCurdy said: “This year we have been taken aback by the huge increase in submissions, all of which have been of such an extremely high quality. With such a large number of entries the competition is fierce, making the achievement of all finalists all the more impressive”.
Plymouth City Council’s National Apprenticeship Scheme week programme will be up and running and in full swing from Monday 9 March. Anyone can drop by and speak to the team at the Guildhall every day during NAS week from 10 am until 2pm.
